Maribor is the second-largest Slovenian city. It is the economic and cultural hub of south-eastern Slovenia. Its location at the juncture of important transport routes from Central to Southeast Europe and from West-Central Europe to the Pannonian Plain had already long ago established Maribor as a significant city and since then this has not changed. Because the border with Austria is only 18 km away the city of Maribor represents the gateway into Slovenia.
Maribor is a city of sports where numerous professional and recreational sports activities take place every day. The time people devote to sport and recreation can be well spent in the sports and recreation facilities in and around the city where they can carry out various sport activities or simply enjoy endless walks, hiking or cycling in the restful green of Pohorje or the surrounding hills.
Since 2011 numerous European clubs have spent their pre-season training for the winter season in the Ledna dvorana Ice Skating Hall – the likes of which include the Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, Spartak Moscow and Salavat Yulaev hockey clubs from Russia, Medveščak from Croatia, and Slovan Bratislava from the Czech Republic.
